STOP ANDY PUZDER, Trump's anti-labor choice for Labor Secretary

January 25, 2017

Donald Trump has made some horrible choices for his cabinet, such as, for Education Secretary, a billionaire who knows nothing about public education except that she wants to privatize it.  His Treasury Secretary nominee is a former Goldman Sachs partner who foreclosed on 36,000 homeowners, in one case throwing a 90-year-old woman out of her house because she made a 27-cent error on a payment.

But his choice for Secretary of Labor is an insult to every worker. Andy Puzder is the CEO of CKE Restaurants, owner of the Hardee’s and Carl’s Jr. fast food chains. Puzder made more money in one day last year  ($17,192) than one of his full-time minimum wage workers makes in a year ($15,130). His employees are so underpaid that they collect an estimated $250 million from American taxpayer-funded safety net programs such as food stamps (SNAP) and Medicaid each year, according to the National Employment Law Project.

Yet he oppose any increase in the minimum wage and has expressed opposition to having a minimum wage at all. But he practices what he preaches by cheating workers even out of their low wages. Workers are routinely pressured to work “off the clock” for no pay at all, and his chains have high rates of sexual harassment of female employees.

So the man who would be in charge of enforcing the country’s employment laws may be someone who routinely breaks those very laws!
