In 2007, the International Labour Organization (ILO), an agency of the United Nations, issued a ruling calling for the United States to "promote the establishment of a collective bargaining framework in the public sector in North Carolina," and called specifically for the repeal of North Carolina General Statute 95-98, the state law that prohibits public employee collective bargaining.

Three years later, the U.S. still fails to uphold its obligations, as a member state of the ILO, to protect the internationally-recognized rights of public employees in North Carolina to freedom of association and collective bargaining.

Please add my voice to those who, acting in support of the International Worker Justice Campaign, are calling upon the Obama Administration and Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis to honor the ruling and recommendations of the International Labour Organization (ILO) resulting from a complaint filed by the United Electrical, Radio & Machine Workers (UE) and UE Local 150. This ruling found the U.S. and the State of North Carolina to be out of compliance with ILO conventions and international labor standards by denying public sector workers the right to collective bargaining. We believe that accountability to international standards should be an obligation of all countries claiming to favor democracy. For the U.S. to allow all of its southern states -- an entire region -- to deny, in varying degrees, public sector workers collective bargaining rights points to a severe failure of democracy.
