Organizing with UE “the Best Thing That Has Ever Happened” at Lanterman Regional Center

Tired of short staffing and arbitrary management decisions, workers at the Frank D Lanterman Regional Center in downtown Los Angeles voted 113-55 on March 22 to join UE. Lanterman staff coordinate critical services for individuals with developmental disabilities, providing social work, advocacy, and support services that allow clients to live normally in the community. They organized for better staffing and client care, and to have a voice to speak up against disrespect from management and retaliation against staff who advocate for clients or take sick time.

UE Local 150/CAAMWU Joins Forces with Other Cummins Unions to Demand End to Healthcare Discrimination

Cummins workers and their union representatives participated in the annual Whitakers MLK Day March and other Martin Luther King Jr. commemorations to celebrate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and to demand that Cummins stop medical discrimination against workers in its Rocky Mount plant and much of its U.S. workforce.

Hallcon Drivers Prepare for National Bargaining

Drivers across the country who work for Hallcon Corp. have selected their bargaining committees for upcoming negotiations to renew UE’s national contract with the company. "Currently, we have surveys out throughout our different areas and we are having conversations with drivers on the priorities they are willing to fight for," said UE Local 1077 President Laura Johnson.

UE-Unifor Study Group Tackles Organizing in North Carolina Meeting

Leaders of UE and Unifor, Canada’s largest private-sector union, met in Durham, North Carolina on January 11th and 12th, to further develop the North American Solidarity Project and discuss new approaches to organizing. The North American Solidarity Project was created by a cooperation agreement between UE and Unifor, ratified by UE members at the 75th Convention in August, with the aim of revitalizing and renewing the labor movement in both countries.

M Chasen and Son Workers Stand Their Ground

UE Local 155 members who work for M Chasen and Son, fed up with low pay and no health insurance, fought off takebacks demanded by the boss and won wage increases he had said he was unwilling to give.

M Chasen and Son is a family-owned company, and while the company claimed not to be doing well financially at the bargaining table, the family who owns the company is doing very well. UE members felt that they should at least have a decent standard of living while working for such a rich boss.

Local 155 Members at Portescap Show Union Colors, Win Improved Wages, Time Off and Layoff Protections

January 25, 2018

On the day their contract expired, UE Local 155 members at Portescap all wore red to demonstrate their unity and determination to win a fair contract. With almost all of the workers participating, management quickly got the message and settled the next day.

The three-year contract increases base wages by 3%, 2.75% and 2.75%. The wage progression was also improved so that new employees reach the top pay rate within a labor grade in 12 months rather than 18.
