UE Delegates Discuss Peace, Union Finances, Plan Political Fightback

Nearly 250 workers at the Vermont Service Center located in St. Albans and Essex gained UE representation on September 21 in an election conducted by the National Labor Relations Board (UE). The vote was 176 to 38 in favor of UE, the largest union victory in Vermont to date this year.
"We are happy because the Union will give the contracted workers some stability. It's about time this happened," said Lynn Corbett, a general clerk at the St. Albans facility.

Just two months after education paraprofessionals in the Branford public schools voted to organize into UE, they are fighting the unjust termination of four of their members. The four paras who have been dismissed have spotless work records and experience ranging from two years to more than 20. Three of the four have bachelor's degrees. One was a leader in the union organizing drive last spring.
The Board of Education claims the terminations are in response to anticipated budget cuts. But the board has also posted job openings for nine new positions in special education.
A North Carolina judge has ruled that a UE member at Central Regional Hospital was unjustly fired on false allegations of patient abuse. The judge also found racial discrimination in the hospital's application of discipline rules.
The UE-GE Conference Board, representing UE locals at GE workplaces, reviewed the tentative agreement and overall situation, and recommended ratification. |
