Local 1421 Negotiates New Contract with Stepan

November 5, 2022

Members of amalgamated UE Local 1421 who work at the Stepan Company ratified a new three-year contract in mid-October.

The contract raises wages by 4, 3.5 and 3.25 percent. Workers received a $1,000 bonus upon ratification, and will receive an additional $2,000 bonus in their first pay period after November 16.

The new contract increases the number of paid sick days from three to five, and adds two weeks to the severance pay due to workers in the event of a plant closure. Workers with a year or more of service will now receive between six and 26 weeks of pay as severance, depending on length of service. Any workers permanently laid off will receive four months of health insurance coverage, and those with 30 years or more will receive a fifth month.

The union also won small increases in the shift differential, to $1.25 per hour for evening shift and $1.35 per hour for midnight shift.

The Local 1421 bargaining committee consisted of President Sabir Sabir, Chief Steward Rogelio Luna, and Keith Mills. They were assisted by Western Region President Bryan Martindale and Field Organizer Fernando Ramirez.
