UE Leader, Vermont Lawmaker Defends Rights of Working People

March 3, 2011

Montpelier, Vermont

Vermont House of Representatives member Bob South -- who is also a worker at Fairbanks Scales in St. Johnsbury and longtime president of UE Local 234 -- recently went into action against the Republican-led assault on working people now being launched in many state legislatures. South was recently re-elected to his second term in the Vermont legislature, overcoming a ferocious campaign against him by a Republican organization which far vastly outspent his own grassroots campaign.

South took the lead in getting the Vermont House of Representatives to pass a resolution expressing support for those union members and working people fighting the attacks of Republican Governor Scott Walker in Wisconsin. (The Vermont resolution, HR 7,  passed 95-44 on February 23 - see Vermont House Journal pages 317-325.) It was also ordered that a copy of the legislative bill be sent to every labor union in Vermont.

Representative South has also joined the growing list of over 350 state elected officials to sign-on to the Progressive States Network letter in support of the Wisconsin Senators who have been blocking the anti-worker attacks.

The Republican politicians leading the current attacks -- and their big business sponsors -- are shocked at the level of resistance they are meeting as they work their dirty deeds. NOW is the time to redouble our efforts to resist and push back.
