General President Peter Knowlton joined UE as a field organizer in 1985 and for the next 30 years organized, serviced, “raised hell” and represented members and locals for the union from Massachusetts to California, but primarily in New England. In 2002 Knowlton was elected president of UE District 2, which became the Northeast Region in 2005. Knowlton was elected General President in 2015.
Director of Organization Gene Elk first came onto the UE field staff in November 1977. In his early assignments he serviced locals and organized mainly in District 6 (Western Pennsylvania), and particularly in the Pittsburgh area. Gene worked with Local 610 in their historic seven-month strike against concessions in 1981-82. In 1986 Gene was promoted to international representative, and he has led organizing and bargaining, and represented the union in arbitrations, in both the public and private sector. Elk was elected Director of Organization in 2015.
Secretary-Treasurer Andrew Dinkelaker joined UE in the 1990s as a member of Local 223, and became a field organizer in 1997. Prior to his 2011 election as a national officer, Dinkelaker was president of the UE Eastern Region and before that, District 6. As secretary-treasurer he’s worked hard to complete the progress of bringing the UE budget into balance so that the union has the financial stability to continue its great work long into the future.
