UPDATE March 18: Major Republican Attacks Stalled By Fierce Resistance

March 16, 2011

Working people across the country continue to expand the mobilizations to stop the gang-up attacks of big business, the Republican Party, and the corporate news media.  UE members have joined the battle in more than 10 states with more to follow.  Republican politicians in 25 states have launched radical attacks on the jobs, wages, pensions, health care benefits, and labor rights of millions of working people.  Their stated goal is to first liquidate unions from the scene, proceed to reduce wages to bare minimum levels, abolish pensions and health care benefits, and then reward their corporate handlers with massive new tax breaks.

In Missouri, working people have blasted-back at the Republican attack and stopped radical right-to-work-for-less legislation. The joint big business and Republican Party attack has now stalled at the gates of the Indiana legislature as a result of a massive outpouring of outrage by working people and union members.

Working people and union families continue to take to the battlefields in Wisconsin and Ohio as Republican lawmakers begin to reel under the weight of a huge tide of public opinion which has turned against them.

"I am asking all UE members and supporters to redouble your efforts to push back against these disgraceful attacks. No matter where you live or work, tell the nearest Republican politician and the nearest boss that you have had it with their greed and their lies.  Tell these folks that we intend to turn the tables and hold them accountable for the misery and destruction they have visited on all working people.  We welcome the support of those elected leaders at all levels who have put their shoulder to the wheel in defense of working people. As for those politicians who have launched these attacks -- and for those who are hiding out while the battle rages -- there will be a political price to pay.  Public opinion is with us on this one.  Even the smallest group taking to the streets to demonstrate for the defense of jobs, our wages, pensions, and health care are instantly supported by other working people.  Students and retired workers, and growing numbers of people who have no connection to a union whatsoever are coming out in support.  But we all need to do more, or do what we have already done again, and again after that. " said UE General Secretary-Treasurer Bruce Klipple.
