UE's Political Action Director Chris Townsend recently appeared on the worldwide cable news channel Al Jazeera, in a half-hour discussion on unions in the 2012 election. Titled "The decline of union power," the program, which aired on August 15, also featured Thea Lee, policy director and chief economist at the AFL-CIO and Thomas Sugrue, professor of history and sociology at the University of Pennsylvania.
Townsend offered a balanced appraisal of both parties, criticizing the Obama administration for failing to stand up for working people and to fight for jobs as many had hoped. But he also warned that the Romney-Ryan ticket would "liquidate us -- liquidate unions and liquidate working people."
