Now Is the Time for Medicare for All

June 3, 2026

Our broken health care system is getting worse by the day. With recent cuts to Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act, 17 million more people could lose their health care this year. This is on top of 26 million people who are already uninsured. Employers continue to demand that workers pay ever higher shares of the cost of insurance, while insurance company profits continue to rise.

The solution is Medicare for All, the kind of universal, public system supported by UE for over 80 years. It is more popular than ever — 63 percent of all voters support it — but it won’t become a reality unless working people organize to demand it.

There are two new opportunities to take action for Medicare for All:

  1. Sign the petition. National Nurses United and the Labor Campaign for Single Payer have launched a new petition together with other UE allies demanding that Congress act on the bold promise of a guaranteed system of truly comprehensive health care that every person in the United States deserves.

  2. Join the June 10 National Organizing Call. Next Wednesday, at 8pm ET / 7pm CT / 6pm MT / 5pm PT, the same group of UE allies will be hosting an organizing call to preview important plans for the summer and give participants ways to plug in to the campaign right away.

Corporate Democrats are busy pushing half measures that prop up the same systems that have failed working people for decades, and the only thing on offer from Republican politicians has been cutting healthcare to pay for tax cuts for the rich and corporations.

To fix the healthcare system, working people need to engage in independent political action to demand real solutions. Sign the petition, join the organizing call, and get busy talking to your co-workers, friends and family about Medicare for All! (More resources are available on the UE Medicare for All web page.)
