Abdul El-Sayed, who made Medicare for All the centerpiece of his campaign, won the Democratic primary for one of Michigan’s U.S. Senate seats on August 4. The former public health official was endorsed by the United Auto Workers, National Nurses United, the Association of Flight Attendants, and the American Federation of Teachers-Michigan.
El-Sayed, who refused to take corporate money, was outspent by a margin of ten to one, with corporations and the pro-Israel lobby AIPAC spending over $60 million in an effort to defeat him. He will face off in the general election against Republican Mike Rogers, a multi-millionaire with close ties to Big Pharma.
