Workers at the Frank D. Lanterman Regional Center in downtown Los Angeles, members of UE Local 1018, are on strike today after overwhelmingly rejecting an inadequate contract offer.
“Our members, who serve some of the most vulnerable people in our communities, have been pushed to the breaking point,” said UE Local 1018 President Jackie Palacios. “We are striking for fair wages, dignity, respect, and to put an end to punitive, disrespectful treatment by management.”
Local 1018 members provide social work, advocacy, and support services for individuals with developmental disabilities. They are seeking a decent wage increase, improved paid time off, and to protect their ability to work remotely.
“Our members routinely go above and beyond in their duties: training their peers, taking extra cases, and filling staffing gaps, all without fair compensation or adequate recognition,” said Palacios. “Meanwhile, three executives at the organization collectively make nearly one million dollars in salary and enjoy privileged remote work options they refuse to extend to the broader workforce.”
“I think management's indifference towards their workers reflects their indifference towards their clients,” said Local 1018 Chief Steward Eric Escobar. “Burn out, low wages, poor treatment, it all leads to workers being unable to take care of themselves and in turn they cannot take care of the client.”
UE Local 1018 members will be picketing at 3303 Wilshire Boulevard beginning at 7:30am this morning.
