Custodians for the Glastonbury Board of Education, members of Sublocal 27 of amalgamated Local 222, ratified a new four-year contract in March. The new contract includes raises, increased life insurance coverage, and improved language.
The members won a wage increase of three percent for each year of the contract. In the first year of the contract, the members will receive an additional $.75 raise. There will also be an hourly pay increase of five dollars for mechanics. Sublocal President and local Vice President Matt Braddon said, “I think the most important part about this new contract are the raises we got for our mechanics. We went to bat for them and now this raise puts them in a place that is competitive with the private sector.”
The contract includes increased annual stipends of $5,000 for lead maintainers and $3,000 for maintainers who hold a state license. Workers who maintain perfect attendance will now be able to carry their extra earned time over to the following year. The members also won an increase in life insurance coverage from $175,000 to $250,000.
Braddon said, “I was happy with the contract. There was some relief once we settled it because we put a lot of work into it and believe it is beneficial to the members.”
The negotiating committee consisted of Sublocal President Matt Braddon, Secretary Tim Trocchi, Treasurer Charlie Lake, executive board members McNeil Johnson and Tim Ford, and alternates Tony Mainella and Kevin Benedetto. They were assisted by International Representative Sherry Bryant.
