When Aramark Announces "Hard Bargaining," Local 1121 Responds with Hard Fightback

July 18, 2011

When the company's chief negotiator announces that he's there to conduct hard bargaining before negotiations even begin, you know you're in for a rough time.

The Aramark corporate human resources manager who made that declaration to the UE Local 1121 bargaining committee backed it up with horrible proposals. The company wanted a five-year contract with two-tier wages, no time-and-a-half pay after eight hours, and one-quarter of the workforce to be temps. The company also came after union leave, healthcare, vacation and incentive pay rates.

The money is owed because Stanley and the other contractors systematically underpaid workers.

In a unanimous vote on February 8 , members approved a new contract and an agreement settling NLRB charges which will put UE and its members back into the shop, which manufactures truck trailers.

People around the world are watching the situation in Japan with deep concern and sympathy for the victims of the recent earthquake and tsunami, and with worry over the dangerous situation at the Fukusima Daiichi nuclear power plant. For UE, those concerns are intensified by our close fraternal relationship with Zenroren, Japan’s large progressive union confederation, a connection that goes back more than 15 years.
